What happens when over 140 children meet to sit down for stories… with a story character? It leads to play, good cheer and a lot of interesting discussions on vegetables, fruits and healthy eating. This was the case on October 20, 2021 at “Colors, food, appetite!”, an event that was equally pleasing to parents, teachers and, of course, children.
In the current context, in which the management of unhealthy eating habits can be a challenge for parents, the event “Colors, food, appetite!” was received as a non-formal education opportunity that actively involved both the little ones and those who enrolled in the workshop. The event was therefore more than welcomed by parents and teachers, who asked for its replication in the future, because it is necessary for children to learn about healthy eating habits through play, play and storytelling.
For an hour and a half we talked leisurely about the role of each fruit or vegetable for their body, what is the connection between the color or shape of fruits and vegetables and their benefits, and what colors stimulate the appetite, to know in the future what to put on the plate so that their meal or snack becomes tastier and more appetizing.
The hosts of this experience were Irina Vasile, teacher for primary education, Facilitator for Open Mindset in Education and SuperTeach teacher and actress Violeta Mitescu, who played the main character in the story “Why do we love Mrs. Apple?”. The children really liked the story – as proof, they answered the Baamboozle questions correctly, and the winners of the exercise gave the second place challengers to diction on the topic of “healthy eating”.
In the end, the little ones overwhelmed us with positive reactions and chat messages that showed us that the event really helped them to look differently at the way they eat and what benefits a healthy lifestyle brings. From now on, colors will no longer be missing from the plate, and vegetables will no longer be set aside because – aren’t they? – they are our best friends.
Did you know that?
Parents and educators are aware of the need for health education and believe that any fun event from which children can acquire healthy eating habits helps. In the face of so many temptations, it is often extremely difficult to make your child’s first choice a fruit or vegetable salad. The event was all the more welcomed as parents and teachers want dynamic and interactive experiential learning opportunities for their children and students. Parents especially wanted the little ones to learn from experts what a healthy lifestyle means in order to learn better habits and make more food-inspired choices.
Only a quarter of parents and teachers who have enrolled their children in the event believe that the little ones understand the need for diversity in nutrition. Moreover, most say that the little ones often refuse vegetables at the table and that they would like the children’s main sweet choice to be a fruit. In this context, we are glad that we were able to give the children the opportunity to participate in a fun event from which they left with a lot of new and interesting information that they said they would share with their friends.
