VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is one of the leading research and innovation organizations in Europe. Solutions for Natural resources and Environment is one of VTT´s business areas in which Industrial biotechnology and Food Solutions form a key part of R&D activities. VTT has envisioned a new sustainable consumer-centric food ecosystem . VTT´s Food R&D focuses on three themes:
1) Consumer centric solutions in which the aim is to move from mass production to mass customization. Consumer and prosumer centric approach is taken for the business development with active customer engagement applying e.g. digitalization
2) Agile production systems in which we study modular and partly distributed production, new fresh food production and service concepts and web-based platforms for manufacturing;
3) Food 4.0 in which the aim is to create efficient and sustainable use of nature’s raw materials, to study “Food without Fields” i.e. food from bioreactors, insect farming and local urban food ecosystems and to evaluate circular food chains to move from side- to mainstreams.
